Acting Classes

Lawton Academy offers two acting classes for kids and teens – Actor’s Playground  and Acting for TV & Movies. Read on to learn about each class and register!

ACTOR'S PLAYGROUND

Teaching the fundamentals of acting and having fun along the way!

This wildly creative acting class is great for newcomers and experienced actors alike. Across the session, students will study the key disciplines of acting and explore how to bring their unique voice to the characters they perform. We pride ourselves on providing a safe environment for every student that offers a sheltered platform to truly express themselves and let their imagination run wild.

Across our 7-week session, students will explore:

  • Theatre Sports – fun acting excercises that develop teamwork, active listening, and creative decision making.
  • Improvisation – creating unscripted scenes that ask each student to trust their instincts and respond to the other actors in bold and unpredictable ways.
  • Scene Study – students will be paired with a partner and given a scene from a play to develop in collaboration with the teacher. The focus is learning how scenes are rehearsed and characters developed. We help students define their character’s need in the scene and connect it to their own personal sensibility.
  • Monologue Performance – actors will be given a monologue to rehearse and perform for the class.
    • Parents are welcomed to the final class to enjoy a showcase of student performances.
SCHEDULE:

Classes are held once per week across our 7-week session.

  • FOR AGES 5-7:
    • GROUP A: SATURDAYS @ 9:30AM [60-MIN]. $315/session
    • GROUP B: SATURDAYS @ 10:30AM [60-MIN]. $315/session
    • GROUP C: SUNDAYS @ 9:30AM [60-MIN]. $315/session
    • GROUP D: SUNDAYS @ 10:30AM [60-MIN]. $315/session
  • FOR AGES 8-10:
    • GROUP A: SATURDAYS @ 9:30AM [90-MIN]. $472.50/session
    • GROUP C: WEDNESDAYS @ 3:30PM [90-MIN]. $472.50/session
  • FOR AGES 11-14:
    • GROUP A: SATURDAYS @ 11AM [90-MIN]. $472.50/session

ACTING FOR TV & MOVIES

For students 9-18 who want to learn how to perform for the screen in our TV studio!

This class is for students excited about movie and TV acting who want to learn how to perform openly and honestly for the camera. Powerful screen acting skills develop over time, so each session our actors will study:

  • TV & Movie Set Roles – understanding the roles of key crew on set and how lighting placement and camera composition will inform and impact an actor’s performance.
  • Auditioning for TV & Movie Roles:
    • Practice the performance of The Slate (ie each actor’s personal intro that is key to all screen auditions)
    • Rehearse an audition scene and then work with your director to develop your performance on set
    • The Cold Read – learn how to personalize and deliver a totally new scene handed to the actor the same day it is filmed.
  • Studio Scene Study – work with a scene partner to rehearse and film a scene from a classic film or television show.
  • Playback Study – it’s extremely important for actors to watch playback of the scene they have just filmed so we prioritize this review period after every shoot wraps.
    • Parents are welcomed to the final class to enjoy a screening of select  scenes that the actors have filmed during the session.

  • GROUP A: FOR KIDS 9-12. THURSDAYS 4-6PM. $630/session
  • GROUP B: FOR TEENS 13-18. FRIDAYS 4-6PM. $630/session
  • GROUP C: FOR KIDS 10-14. SUNDAYS 9:30-11:30AM. $630/session
